What to Expect from an Acupuncture Treatment

Many people don’t realize that an acupuncture session can involve more than just needles. As Registered Acupuncturists (R.Ac), we are trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which takes a holistic approach to health. In Ontario, our education also integrates aspects of Western assessment, allowing us to treat a range of conditions beyond musculoskeletal (MSK) concerns. We assess factors like digestion, energy levels, sleep, stress, and—for women—menstrual health.

The Initial Consultation

Because TCM focuses on identifying imbalances that contribute to health concerns, an initial consultation involves a detailed intake process. We ask questions related to both internal and external factors, including diet, lifestyle, and emotional well-being. In addition to this, we conduct various assessments such as tongue and pulse diagnosis, orthopedic testing, and palpation to evaluate both physical and energetic imbalances.

Orthopedic Testing

Registered Acupuncturists are trained in orthopedic muscle testing as well as internal diagnostics.

The Treatment Plan

After gathering this information, we explain the treatment plan, including the areas that will be addressed and any additional modalities that may be incorporated, such as gua sha, tuina, cupping therapy, or moxibustion (where applicable). Patient-practitioner communication is essential, and we ensure patients fully understand the treatment process, with alternative options provided if needed.

Demonstration of Fire Cupping

Not only are Registered Acupuncturists able to apply cupping therapy, they are fully trained in a specialized form of Fire Cupping involving warming cups.

Treatment Expectations

Once the patient is informed and comfortable, the session begins. While some may feel immediate effects, it’s common for results to take a few hours or even a day to become noticeable. Likewise, the effects of treatment may last for hours to days, but because imbalances develop over time, multiple sessions are often needed to encourage long-term improvements.

For best results, follow-up treatments are recommended based on the practitioner’s assessment and the condition being treated. Acupuncture is a process, and consistency is key to achieving lasting benefits.
