Acupuncture Techniques: Needle Moxa
Needle Moxa: A Powerful Tool for Joint Recovery and Athletic Performance
As an acupuncturist and former athlete, I’m always looking for the most effective ways to support recovery and performance. One technique that has personally made a difference in my own training is needle moxibustion (needle moxa)—a combination of acupuncture and heat therapy that can significantly aid joint recovery.
What is Needle Moxa?
Needle moxa is a technique in which a small amount of moxa (dried mugwort) is placed on top of an inserted acupuncture needle and lit. The slow, gentle burning of the moxa generates deep, penetrating heat that moves through the needle into the muscle, fascia, and joints. Unlike surface-level heat therapies like heating pads, this method delivers warmth directly to deeper tissues, where circulation and healing factors are often needed most.

My patient experienced shoulder stiffness when rotating the joint. I used needle moxa to warm the area and stimulate circulation, which helped release tension and improve her range of motion.
How is Needle Moxa Applied?
I typically use needle moxa on areas with chronic pain, stiffness, or poor circulation. For example, in cases of knee or shoulder pain, acupuncture needles are inserted into key points around the joint, then small moxa cones are placed on top. As the moxa burns, it warms the joint, promotes circulation, and helps the body’s natural healing process. The sensation is a deep, soothing warmth that radiates into the affected area.
Three Main Benefits of Needle Moxa
Boosts Circulation and Reduces Stagnation
Many joint injuries involve blood and Qi stagnation, where circulation slows down and healing is impaired. The heat from needle moxa stimulates blood flow, ensuring that oxygen and nutrients reach the injured tissues. This helps speed up recovery and reduce stiffness.Eases Inflammation and Swelling
In TCM, joint injuries are often linked to “cold-damp” stagnation, which can worsen pain and restrict movement. Needle moxa warms the area, expels cold, and reduces excess fluid retention, making it an excellent therapy for chronic joint conditions like arthritis, bursitis, or post-injury swelling.Improves Joint Stability and Recovery
By warming the connective tissues and tendons, needle moxa helps relax stiffness while promoting proper alignment and function. Over time, this can improve joint stability and reduce the risk of re-injury—something incredibly valuable for athletes who depend on strong, stable joints for peak performance.
How I’ve Used Needle Moxa in My Own Training
As an athlete, I’ve experienced firsthand how needle moxa can aid recovery. As a former boxer/kickboxer and now powerlifter, my joints—especially my knees and shoulders—would often feel stiff and fatigued from intense training. While traditional recovery methods like stretching and mobility work helped, they weren’t always enough to fully relieve deep-seated tension.
Using needle moxa on my shoulders helped me maintain better mobility and recover from the constant strain of boxing training. In powerlifting, my knees took a lot of stress from heavy squats and explosive movements, and I found that needle moxa helped ease soreness and improve my joint stability. The deep warmth it provided felt like it was unlocking tightness that regular stretching and massage couldn’t quite reach.
For athletes looking to recover faster, prevent injuries, and maintain peak performance, needle moxa is a valuable tool worth exploring. It’s not just about treating pain—it’s about keeping the body in balance and staying ahead of potential injuries before they become a problem.
